Dear Prime Minister,

I am sure that you are busy, so I will keep this brief.

Have you ever read ‘Horton Hears A Who’ by Dr Seuss?

If not, or if you only vaguely recall it from years gone by, you should read it again, because you might just find that it helps solve a lot of dilemmas when it comes to how to make the big decisions that a Prime Minister must face.

The important line is “A person’s a person, no matter how small”.

This line could easily be adapted,

“A person’s a person no matter how disabled”, for example.

My son is 11 year old and is often scared to go out because his life experience has made him feel as though he is less than important just because he cannot stand up or walk. He is disabled by facilities on a daily basis and that is something which should not be happening in the 21st century in a supposedly developed country.

He needs YOU to make sure that the Equality Act actually works, because right now it doesn’t. He is eleven years old and should not have to take legal action against wealthy businesses in order to enforce his right to access their services without being “treated less favourably due to disability”. That is how the Equality Act currently stands – my eleven year old son has to argue for his rights because the government and the law have abandoned him. If it is against the law to treat a person “less favourably due to disability” then the law should step up without that person having to endure further heartache.

Please don’t keep abandoning my son. Please remember that he is a person too.

Yours sincerely,

Rachel
Mum to a person who really does matter.

No matter how smallishimg_7618

P.S. Whilst you have a moment, take a look at my friend’s petition. It should not be necessary to petition for such a basic human right in the UK in the 21st century.

Help end this petition, help end this hideous inequality.

  1. Your son is incredible – and I cannot imagine how tough it must be to be diminished by your own government because of your capabilities. I may be all the way in the US, but this is a GLOBAL problem – will definitely be looking at the petition ❤ #KCACOLS

  2. It really is awful that certain places don’t feel the need to completely divesify and accept everybody. They can seem to remodel and put in massive rides that cost millions yet can’t add in a couple of toilets to help young people that would cost just a fraction of the price! #KCACOLS

    1. It is terrible that successive governments have ignored the needs of those with significant disabilities. They should all be ashamed.
